On Saturday, July7, 2007 the new 7 Wonders of the World have been announced during the Official Declaration ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal.
Swiss corporation New Open World Corporation started an initiative to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. On January 1, 2006 there were announced twenty-one finalists.
So the New 7 Wonders are: Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer, Peru's Machu Picchu, and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid were chosen alongside the Great Wall of China, Jordan's Petra, the Colosseum in Rome and India's Taj Mahal.
These wonders were selected according to a sum of more than 100 million votes casted by people from all over the world by Internet and cell phone text messages.
These new marvels were presented on a show where 50,000-member audience gathered. The show took place at the soccer stadium at Lisbon and was performed by Jennifer Lopez and Jose Carreras, also there were an American actress Hilary Swank, British actor Ben Kingsley and Indian actress Bipasha Basu.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO based in Paris has distanced itself from the poll of the new seven wonders stating that it reflects just the opinion of those who voted but keeps updating its own list which now totals 851 World Heritage Sites.
The Seven Wonders of the World were based on the guide-books popular among Hellenic sight-seers and included only works located around the Mediterranean rim, moreover later list included marvels of the Medieval World and also of the Modern World.
